Current Exhibitions

What is currently on view in the gallery?

Gullah Spirit: Jonathan Green is on view in the main gallery January 17 - March 3, 2023. The exhibition highlights 33 original works on loan from Morris Museum of Art, Myrtle Beach Art Museum and Simple Pleasures from our own collection. Charleston-based artist, Jonathan Green, is regarded as the authoritative herald of Gullah visual arts. Green’s distinctive Lowcountry vistas are marked with bold, mismatched patterns and rich color. His mastery of color and skillful use of the human figure in rural and urban environments, allows him to preserve and share with the viewer a deep sense of community, and how the life challenges of work, love, and belonging are met.

Sewn by the Sea: Sweetgrass Basketry is on view in the special exhibits gallery January 17 - March 3, 2023. Sweetgrass basketry is one of the nation’s oldest and most beautiful handicrafts of African origin. For more than 300 years, Gullah Geechee people have been weaving baskets using locally-harvested bulrush, a strong marsh grass that thrives in the sandy soil of the Lowcountry. Originally used as winnowing fans to separate the rice seed from its chaff, sweetgrass baskets are now regarded among the nation’s most prized cultural souvenirs. This exhibition traces the evolution and process of sweetgrass basket making in the South Carolina low country and features original baskets by Mount Pleasant-based artists Vera Manigault, Martha Cayetano and Andrea Cayetano-Jefferson.

The lead sponsor for both exhibitions is South Carolina Humanities. The mission of South Carolina Humanities is to enrich the cultural and intellectual lives of all South Carolinians. This not-for-profit organization presents and/or supports literary initiatives, lectures, exhibits, festivals, publications, oral history projects, videos and other humanities-based experiences that reach more than 250,000 citizens annually. South Carolina Humanities receives funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities as well as corporate, foundation and individual donors. It is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of community leaders from throughout the state.

The local sponsors for both exhibitions include Greenwood County Community Foundation, Greenwood Women Care and Self Family Foundation.
