What is currently on view in the gallery?

Into the Depths is on view in the main gallery January 22 - March 1, 2025. The exhibition is inspired by the journey of a group of Black divers known as DWP (Diving with a Purpose) that trains divers to find and conserve historical and cultural artifacts buried deep in the waters - primarily those of slave ship wreckages across the middle passage. Since its founding in 2003, DWP has trained some 500 divers to help archaeologists and historians search for and document such ships. The group’s goal is to help Black people to find their own history and tell their own stories - to reveal a more inclusive history of the Transatlantic Era of African Enslavement. The exhibition features a series of images captured by documentary photographer Wayne Lawrence for a feature which appeared in the March 2022 publication of National Geographic. The series accompanied a personal account by Nat Geo Explorer, Tara Roberts of her own experience diving with DWP. The article and the exhibition are titled after Tara’s six-part podcast series of the same name.

Diving With A Purpose is on view in the special exhibits gallery January 28 - March 1, 2025. DWP is dedicated to the conservation and protection of submerged heritage resources by providing education, training, certification and field experience to adults and youth in the fields of maritime archaeology and ocean conservation. Their special focus is the protection, documentation and interpretation of African slave trade shipwrecks and the maritime history and culture of African Americans. The exhibition is a historical overview highlighting DWP's history, divers and special moments.

The lead sponsor for both exhibitions and related events is the Self Family Foundation.
The reception sponsor is Charles Grose of The Grose Law Firm.
