Are you a Lego enthusiast?
Brickmasters of the Lakelands spotlights original Lego creations designed and built by members of the Lakelands community. Select members of the SC Bricks LUG will also have Lego creations on view. The second annual showcase is on view in the main gallery October 10 - 21, 2023 and will be a highlight of the upcoming iMAGINE Lakelands STEAM Festival.
In August 2022, the center hosted an inaugural event and Lego competition in which community members submitted Lego builds of their own design. The competition included over 40 entries in eight categories: Youth/Elementary, Youth/Middle, Youth/High, Adult, Family, Non-Profit, Business and Kit Category. Entrants competed for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each category and overall Best of Show.
This year's competition theme is "Mobility," and has been juried by master builder, Mark Lorah.
A special awards ceremony will be held on Saturday, October 21 @ 1:30 pm to honor award recipients of this year's competition.
What does the competition theme "mobility" mean?
Mobility is the abilty to move or be moved freely and easily. This year's competition theme will encourage participants to use their imagination to innovate ideas related to "mobility" with their LEGO creation. Each construction, whether it be a sustainable vehicle of the future, a versatile all-terrain mover, a new road system to accommodate bicycles and joggers, or a fantastical transportation device, must embody the theme.
What are some examples of the competition theme?
Mobility can include any mode of transportation (scooter, bike, car, truck, bus, train, boat, submarine, plane, etc). It can also include the terrain in which we move on or through (road, bridge, bike lane, park, trail, escalator, elevator, tunnel, sidewalk, etc). Mobility can involve recreation as well (skateboard, rollercoaster, carnival ride, rock climbing wall, gym equipment, hot air balloon, parasailing, skiing, etc). It can include occupational equipment as well (tractor, forklift, cart, machinary, etc). Mobility can also be a theme of the past and future (horseback, spaceships, alien air crafts, jetpacks/suits, etc).
What should you keep in mind when building your LEGO creation?
Be creative and don't forget about accessibility. Some people use wheelchairs, canes, walkers, or robotic legs to get from point A to B. How will your design accommodate different abilities? Do some research. Take time to learn about your own community. How can your LEGO creation represent an innovative concept that might make your community better able to meet the mobility needs of everyone.
